- Pay off credit card debt faster: Visualize your outstanding balances and focus on paying off high-interest cards first.
- Track credit card usage by category: Analyze spending across categories such as subscriptions, dining, travel, and more to build better habits.
- Combine with checking and savings accounts: Reflect payments in your full financial picture and see how paying off debt affects your cash accounts.
How It Works
Step 1: Set Up Your Accounts
Create entries for each of your credit cards in the Account Balance Tracker, labeling them as “Debt.”
Add starting balances—use negative numbers to represent what you owe (e.g., -$800).
Step 2: Log Purchases
Use the Spending Tracker to log purchases made with your cards. This increases the debt balance for that specific card.
Example:
- Account (Out): Amex
- Amount: $60
- Category: Subscriptions
Step 3: Log Credit Card Payments
Use the Income & Expense Tracker to log payments made toward your cards from another account.
Example:
- Account (Out): Checking Account
- Amount: $500
- Account (In): Chase Credit Card
This reduces the card’s balance and also adjusts your checking balance.
Step 4: Track Interest or Refunds
Record monthly interest or refunds as income/expenses to reflect updated balances accurately.
Example for refund:
- Account (In): Amex
- Amount: $80
- Category: Refund – Clothing
Step 5: Monitor Credit Utilization
Add a “Credit Limit” column for each card and calculate utilization using a formula property:
(Current Balance / Credit Limit) x 100
